Identity Photography Series: Duality Of Man

Duality (noun)
the state of combining two different things.

Two worlds colliding
The celebration of love in the form of a child
But did you ever consider their identity crisis?
Similar to a puzzle piece
Unable to fit perfectly into either culture
Stuck somewhere in the middle
Sleepless nights in a lost world
Learning more to understand each background
The history, positivity and art of the motherland
In comparison to the western world
The land of opportunities
Slowly embracing diversity
Representing a wide range of communities
No longer searching for acceptance or validation
It’s a conversation between me, myself and I.

The last instalment of the photography series had me travelling around Elephant and Castle with the lovely Eboni. The theme of the photoshoot revolved around duality. A topic I’ve previously touched upon in my poetry. It was an interesting challenge to portray duality in a visual format. Playing with lighting, the contrast of clothing against the background and even the attitude portrayed. What comes to mind when you hear the term duality? With no set answer, the possibilities are endless. A juxtaposition of emotions, a yin and yang perspective or a product of an interracial relationship. All these examples fall under this category, but what response did you have?

Opening my eyes to discover my roots
My first home was my mother
The beautiful melodies she would share
Now, in the present day
Identity is what I see in the mirror
What I choose to accept and deny
Shaped by society
I’m a product of my environment
The wild untamed beauty
Striving for better
But it’s bigger than just me
Merely a pawn in this cosmic structure
Deciphering my purpose and two cultures
All whilst leaving my mark in the history books
What do you identify with?

I’d like to take a moment to thank all the beauties that participated in my photography series exploring identity. It allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and walk in unfamiliar territory. It was fun capturing the essence of each individual. Honestly, I was in awe of the confidence, creative flair and styling techniques they all held.
