Inspired by British Vogue’s new podcast,  Appearances. A fascination with beauty, how it can elevate a career and alter how the world defines an individual. Posing an intriguing question, I wondered how did I become aware of my beauty? Simply put, the power of styling. I remember watching shows with Jeannie Mai (How Do I Look?) and Tyra Banks (America’s Next Top Model) that elevated women through styling choices and the guidance to work any look, just smize. Both women exuded confidence, taught the nation lessons in fashion and used their gift. It inspired me to be aware of my choices, the message an outfit conveys and colour connotations. Royalty, courage and strength, can you guess my favourite colour?

Frida Kahlo once said I paint myself because I am often alone and I am the subject I know best. Yet this wasn’t the case for me, spending the most time with myself yet knowing the least guided my path towards self-discovery. Learning to love, accept and celebrate every aspect of the physical and the hidden depths. It wasn’t until my interest peaked in clothing and creativity, that I truly accepted my beauty. Originally styling was a way to hide aspects of my body and blend in with the crowd. Feeling embarrassed I would opt for oversized silhouettes, drowning myself in layers of material, but that’s no longer the case. Instead, I dress to showcase my personality, add some colour to the world and express my thoughts, especially through streetwear and slogan tees.
