Syren Rivers – Selfie Queen

Could selfies be harming us? We continually take selfies yet remain unaware of knowledge of self. In recent years, the popularity of selfies has soared to the extent that they’re ubiquitous. However, have you stopped to think about the effect it’s having on our self-esteem? The act itself forces more awareness when it comes to the physical entity, thus, in turn, increases self-consciousness as we start thinking about how others may perceive us. Whilst taking a selfie, we tend to look at the correct angle, lighting and pose, and if we’re still not satisfied, simply slap a filter on it. It does raise the question, what message do selfies communicate, other than “hey, it’s my face, again”, how do we not get bored seeing similar snaps repeatedly?

By sharing our selfies on social media, we’re unconsciously seeking societal validation through comments and likes. If a post doesn’t get engagement, we’re quick to delete and repost another image, which lowers our self-esteem, as questions consume the mind, do I look beautiful? The notion of beauty is distorted, determined by a plethora of external forces, it can be difficult to grow with a positive mindset. Especially when the media circulates images of the ideal woman in one form. Society is a fusion of multi-cultural queens yet the media and fashion houses don’t acknowledge it, though it may be getting better slowly, there’s still a long journey for improvement. Society alienates women, objectifying a gender at every opportunity, from pop culture to advertisements. We teach girls they can be ambitious, not for accomplishments but for the attention of others, in their most decorative form. Capitalism thrives in this environment, marketing the newest makeup, skincare or teeth whitening product that removes the impurities we worry about. On that note, let me introduce UK-based recording artist Syren Rivers. With many achievements under his belt, he’s focusing on his own authentic sound with the upcoming release of Selfie Queen. Commonly known for pushing the boundaries of RnB/Soul, he adds his own input to the current culture of always being online.

By observing a technologically advanced society, the increased vanity among humanity and the overall selfie culture, Syren Rivers created the song Selfie Queen on a smooth R&B instrumental. He mentions the misplaced priorities, dissolved aspirations fused with get-rich-quick schemes that have resulted in being famous on social media, he then continues to question the mindset behind such actions. Does an online presence matter in reality? Especially when walking down the street you merge into the crowd, living on minimum wage, the content has no substance, not to mention beauty fades eventually, so what’s plan b? Remove the selfie from your title, increase self-awareness by embracing your inner queen. Step one, visualisation is key to conquering life, first, think about the long-term goals you wish to achieve. According to Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret that is all you need, though the universe may respect the law of attraction, it respects a good hustle even more. That involves creating a plan, even if it’s just for the month ahead. There’s power in knowing what you want, combined with a strong work ethic, the world is truly your oyster. You all have the potential to succeed in your dreams, know your purpose. Don’t fall victim to the pressures of a selfie generation, know your worth as a queen.

Thanks for sharing. I love discovering new artists. I'm so bad at actually finding new music to listen to. I rely on others sharing their recommendations. I agree that we shouldn't heft hung up on social media interaction to value ourselves.

I think with everything, it's moderation. If someone is posting selfies due to low self-esteem, than that's an issue. If someone is posting it because they confident and feeling good then that's okay. Great post lovely!
